EFI Partners with Port Harcourt Global Shapers, Rivers State Secondary Schools Board & Others to Organize Climate Change Essay Competition
Environmental Friendly Initiative (EFI) in collaboration with the Port Harcourt Global Shapers, Rivers State Secondary Schools Board, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), and Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) are organizing an essay writing competition for Senior Secondary Students in Rivers State, Nigeria.
The essay competition, which is themed; “Climate Change an Emerged Reality in our Biodiversity: the role of the Nigerian Youth”, began during the long academic vacation (July-September) and aims at young people within the ages of 13 and 18 who are in the public Senior Secondary Schools. The project was designed to engage the youths in a meaningful pursuit during their long vacation: channel their energies in a meaningful pursuit; encourage them to develop their writing skills and increase awareness on their role as global citizens to engage in key challenging issues facing the international community.
The organizers of this essay competition believe that “fostering environmental stewardship through education is critical to addressing youths’ restiveness and environmental challenges current in the Niger Delta. The future of Rivers State (and the Niger Delta in general) rests on youths developing a sense of respect and responsibility for the environment they will inherit.”
The Paris Agreement provides world leaders a framework to reduce emissions and tackle rising temperatures planet-wide. Youths can be a powerful force to make sure they live up to their commitments and take action. Yes a lot of progress has been made but there is still a lot more to do to ensure that we mitigate the effects of climate change and pass to the next generation a cleaner and greener planet earth.
